Jewelry Stories of Ring

Nowadays people always call the ring “Jie Zhi” in Chinese. So what are the meanings of the word “Jie”(restrain, control) ? There are two kinds of stories about the ring.

The first story is that the rings are those little finger rings made by metals that are made for emperor to control his short temper.

Another stories about the rings is that in Chinese ancient time, the ring originally stands for the imperial status and rights. The emperors usually wear a ring on their thumbs to show their powerful status. Later, females in the palace also begin to wear rings. But they usually wear the rings on other fingers of their left hands. The rings they wear have the meaning of taboos, which is a limitation of women.

It is recorded that those concubines can't be closed to the emperor during their periods of menstruation or pregnancy. It is because the unclear body of women will bring the unluckiness to him.

Nowadays, rings have no any meanings of taboos, but when a man presents a ring to a woman and help her to wear it on her hand, it may still has some meanings of monopolizing her more or less.
